📖 Detailed Content

Customer Background & Requirements

The customer designs and manufactures professional audio signal processing equipment for studio, live sound, and broadcast applications. The JQ AUDIO ISolator required an enclosure that:

  • Was compact and robust enough for desktop and rackmount-adjacent use
  • Featured a premium matte black finish consistent with professional audio equipment aesthetics
  • Accommodated complex multi-interface cutouts including XLR female connector, dual RCA input ports, toggle switches, and ground lift controls
  • Supported clear silk screen labeling for all port identifications ("INPUT A", "INPUT B", "LIFT", "EARTH", "A&B SHIELD")
  • Provided EMI shielding capability to protect sensitive audio signal circuitry
  • Supported small-to-medium batch production with competitive pricing

Our Solution

① Material Selection 5052-H32 aluminum alloy sheet (1.5mm thickness) was selected as the primary material. Key advantages for this application:

Property Benefit
High strength Rigid enclosure with thin walls
Excellent formability Clean bends at corners
EMI shielding Protects internal audio circuits
Anodizing compatibility Deep, uniform black color absorption
Lightweight Ideal for portable audio equipment

② Sheet Metal Bending — Enclosure Body The main enclosure body was formed through precision CNC bending:

  • Material cut to flat blank via CNC punching
  • Four-sided box formed through sequential brake press bending
  • Corner bend radius: R0.5mm for sharp, professional appearance
  • Dimensional tolerance: ±0.3mm on overall body dimensions
  • Top panel and bottom panel fabricated as separate pieces secured with M3 countersunk screws at four corners

③ CNC Milling & Punching — Interface Cutouts All interface openings were precision machined to exact specifications:

Interface Specification Panel Location
XLR Female Connector Standard XLR D-shape cutout Front panel left
RCA Input A & B Dual Ø8mm precision holes Front panel
Toggle Switches (×2) LIFT/EARTH switches, precise slot cutouts Front panel
Ground Screw Terminal M4 threaded hole Front panel
Internal PCB Mounting M3 threaded standoff holes Base panel

All cutout positional tolerances controlled to ±0.1mm for precise connector fitment. 4

④ Surface Treatment — Brushing + Black Anodizing

Stage 1 — Wire Brushing:

  • Linear brushing direction: horizontal across panel face
  • Grit grade: 180# for fine, uniform satin texture
  • Creates consistent metallic grain before anodizing
  • Effectively masks minor surface imperfections

Stage 2 — Black Anodizing:

Parameter Value
Electrolyte Sulfuric acid solution 18–20%
Voltage 14–18V
Bath temperature 20–22°C
Anodizing time 30–40 minutes
Coloring method Electrochemical black coloring
Oxide film thickness 10–12μm
Sealing Hot water 90–95°C, 20–25 minutes

The result is the deep, uniform matte black finish visible on the enclosure — consistent across all panels, edges, and machined surfaces.

⑤ Silk Screen Printing Professional branding and port identification labels were applied via silk screen printing:

  • White ink on black anodized surface for maximum contrast
  • Labels applied: "JQ AUDIO", "ISolator", "Dual channel audio isolator", "INPUT A", "INPUT B", "LIFT", "EARTH", "A&B SHIELD"
  • Logo panel printed on top surface
  • Ink adhesion tested: cross-cut adhesion test passed, no peeling after 72-hour humidity test

Process Flow

5052 Aluminum Sheet → CNC Punching (Flat Blank)
→ CNC Bending (Box Forming) → CNC Milling (Interface Cutouts)
→ Deburring & Edge Smoothing → Wire Brushing (180#)
→ Pre-treatment (Degreasing + Alkaline Etch + Neutralize)
→ Black Anodizing → Electrochemical Coloring → Sealing
→ Silk Screen Printing → QC Inspection → Assembly → Packaging
